How to Boost your Wedding Savings

In a time when the average couple in Ireland spends €25,000 on their wedding, this article is going to provide some tips on how you can boost your savings in the months and years leading up to the big day.

We’re all about making as many savings as possible and regularly write about money-saving ideas here on the blog, however, unfortunately there are still certain things that have to be paid for no matter how frugal or DIY savvy we are. It is with this in mind that we have compiled a list of ways to boost your savings, hopefully leaving you with a bit extra left over to enjoy a romantic honeymoon after the big event.

Wedding costs Kilkenny
Leave the Lattes – Saving of €1,560 a year

If like me, you’re quite partial to a coffee most days from the local barista or regularly head in to Starbucks on your way home from work, you could be costing yourself up to €30 a week! Over the space of a year this adds up to the considerable sum of €1,560… hard to believe right? Knock the coffee on the head and treat yourself to some roasted coffee you can make at home when you feel the need for that all-important caffeine hit.

Kick the Habit – Minimum saving of €3,590 a year

For those of you who smoke, don’t worry this isn’t going to be a lecture on why you should give up, you already know that too well. Let’s let the maths do the talking. The average full-time smoker will buy at minimum 6 packs of cigarettes a week, by todays prices that’s a staggering €70 a week, giving you a total of €3,590 a year. Just think what a difference that will make to your budget!

Take-away the urge – Saving of €800 + a year

Let’s assume you and your other half maybe get a take-away once every two weeks (that’s a fairly reserved assumption). At a spend of approximately €30 for each order, you could be looking at savings that total over €800 a year.

Stay in and count your money – Saving of €3,00 per person per year – Total €6,000
Whilst we all need to get out and socialise after a busy week at work, an individual who likes to go out once a week for a ‘few’ drinks can save upwards of €3,000 per year. By cutting down on the social outings as a couple for a few months or just reducing the amount of times you go out you could be adding a whopping total of €6,000 to your wedding day fund. Don’t go too crazy though, we all need to let loose once in a while and staying in indefinitely will have you going a little bit crazy!

Other cutbacks you and your partner can make in the lead-up to your big day, which should produce some significant savings:

• Cut down on unnecessary shopping trips
• Sell some of your unwanted goods or clothes on eBay
• Good at crafting? Set up an Etsy account and watch the money roll in!
• Shop for unbranded groceries
• Switch your banking to an account with less fees and higher interest rates
• Switch utility accounts such as gas and electric for more competitive prices
• Have an attic full of old books – sell these on Amazon
• Become a trader at your local car boot sale
• Have a spare room? Why not take in a lodger?

If you have any ideas to boost your savings in the lead up to your big day we would absolutely love to hear from you.

Weddings in Ireland on a Budget

Whether you’re tying the knot in Tipperary, Kilkenny, Waterford or further afield the cost of planning a wedding can be a point of stress for many couples. At a time when you should be feeling excited and happy you may sometimes feel a little overwhelmed by the ever-mounting costs. Having spoken to many couples over the years whilst planning the approach of their wedding video, I have been lucky enough to pick up some really fabulous money saving tips, which I am going to share with you today.

Wedding planning on a budget
Choose your timing wisely

For those of you who really don’t mind what time of the week you get married, there’s a lot to be said for off-peak times. Mid-week weddings in Ireland can give you some superb savings and most venues will throw in some extras free of charge when business is quiet. By choosing a mid-week wedding date you can be assured you will make significant savings. Also, we’re seeing more and more couples opting for the months stretching from autumn to late spring when once again the costs are significantly lower. Avoiding holidays such as Valentines Day, the Christmas season and Bank Holidays will also allow you a bit more leeway with budgeting.

DIY Weddings

Think about all the things you need for the perfect wedding. Now think about how much of this you may be able to do yourself. Rope in artistic friends to work on wedding stationery design and floral decorations and consider making some homemade treats that can be used as wedding favours.

Dressing the Wedding Party

Every wedding party is unique, some will have up to 20 people at the top table, others will opt for a low-key affair with just a Best Man and Maid of Honour. This choice is entirely down to the couple. However, if you’re facing rising costs when dressing the bridal party, it may be an idea to start looking online or at high street retailers as opposed to bridal specialists. Some of our high street stores in Ireland now offer incredible value on clothing for both men and women that would like absolutely wonderful on the day. Also check out eBay and other online marketplaces for clothing, footwear and accessories.

Keep it online

Going digital with your wedding stationery can be a real cost saver when it comes to planning your wedding. We are now talking to many brides and grooms who opt to send invites via email or through social media. This option may not be for everyone but can really make a difference to your budget and really won’t have any impact on the big day itself.

Ask!

Never be afraid to ask for a discount, you can be assured that your chosen venue has more than covered their costs with the initial quote and there will be room for negotiation in some way. If the venue is unable to give you a better price then ask for extras to be included at no extra cost. Corkage, bar extension, drinks for the toast and evening nibbles may be just some of the items they may be able to accommodate you with.

Why you should be attending your local wedding fair

No doubt you’ve seen adverts and campaigns for wedding fairs in Tipperary and Kilkenny or up and down the country from the very moment of your engagement. Which should you attend and which should you give a wide berth? Some of the largest wedding fairs in the country, while very worthwhile in most cases, can be an expensive day out if you have to make a long journey and let’s be honest; most of the suppliers will serve only the bigger cities. In this article we are going to talk about the importance of attending wedding fairs in your own locality and how it can be a very worthwhile day out.

Wedding Fair In Kilkenny

• Get to know your local wedding vendors and suppliers
You may be under the mistaken impression that your small town or rural locality may not have a lot to offer for your big day. This is where you are most certainly incorrect. Most small towns across Ireland are littered with small businesses, entrepreneurs, freelancers and craft enthusiasts that can make your wedding day all that more special. Take a trip to your local wedding fair and see for yourself.

• Have fun spending time with friends and family
The beauty of a local wedding fair is that there is little or no travel required. Any friends or family you would like to attend should have no problems taking an hour out of their day and elderly relatives will be appreciative of a local venue.

• Get Inspiration
Every wedding fair you attend will give you buckets of information, sometimes a little too much. The larger fairs can leave you feeling overwhelmed and confused about the choices you will need to make in the coming months, but a smaller more intimate venue with suppliers you know and trust can prove the most inspirational of all.

Wedding Fair In Tipperary

• Supporting Local Business will make you feel Good
Supporting a local business with a great reputation can make you feel infinitely better than dealing with a national company or enterprise. You are in essence keeping the supplier in business, what could be better than supporting those in your own locality?

• Get the Chance to Enter some Great Competitions
When you attend the larger wedding fairs and enter the many competitions in the hope of winning a service or product, you are competing with the thousands of others who are visiting that day or indeed that week. By going to a local event you have a much better chance of bagging something that will make a difference to your big day.

• You can ask all the questions you want
Local wedding suppliers will have the time to answer any questions you may have and will be quicker to follow up with any queries if it is just a one-day event. It will also be easier to contact the supplier after the event if you need to by simply popping to their place of business.

For those of you who are planning on hiring a wedding videographer, please get in touch and we will be happy to let you know if we are attending a wedding fair in your locality.

Keeping the Kids Entertained at your Wedding

As with any occasion, planning your wedding can take up much more of your time and attention than most ever possibly imagine. We hope that our regular wedding blog posts are helping you to get things ticked off your list a little bit faster and with a little less stress.
In this article we are going to give you a few pointers on keeping the kids happy and entertained at your wedding. If you decide to have children at your ceremony and reception, then it’s pretty important that the little ones enjoy themselves and don’t find the whole situation too overwhelming or boring. Remember, a happy child makes for happy parents and that will make all the difference to your big day.

Kids wedding party Kilkenny
• Hire a professional kids entertainer.

If you have enough money in your budget, then hiring a professional children’s entertainer for a few hours could be a great choice for you and your guests. Most entertainers will come fully equipped with all they need to keep the little ones entertained and happy. Ideal for during the speeches when the kids may get a bit restless!

• Hire a bouncy castle

Bouncy castles just never go out of fashion, and let’s be honest, you will probably have a hard time keeping some of the adults away from it! Hiring a bouncy castle is the ideal way to keep kids happy throughout the day. Make sure you check with the venue in advance and maybe ask about the possibility of an extra staff member to supervise.

• Provide goodie bags

Your young guests will definitely appreciate any little toys, games or trinkets they receive on the day and a goodie bag is the ideal way to keep them entertained at the table. Consider some colouring pencils or crayons, card or board games and of course some candy for those little sweet teeth!

• Provide a quiet space

Keep in mind that your wedding day is going to feel extra long for those with little legs and hands. By providing a quiet space for them to catch a nap or watch some tv you will be doing their parents a favour. Ask the venue about setting up a projector screen for a Disney screening or provide beanbags and low lighting so the little ones can get some well deserved rest.

• Hire or make your own candy cart

Candy carts are all the rage at the moment, and whether you make your own or hire a dedicated professional, this addition to your celebrations will definitely go down well with the children. Let’s be honest, it’s going to go down well with most adults as well!

• Fancy dress

Have a fancy dress party on the side for the kids at the reception. Let them get dressed up as their favourite characters and have their very own fancy dress party. You could also provide some face painting for the kids so they can really get into the spirit of things.

Kids having fun at Tipperary wedding

Whatever you decide, it’s important to remember that these little people at your wedding need to be well looked after. It’s a long day for most adults, so you can only imagine how the kids must feel come dinnertime. Try to include the children as much as possible in the occasions whilst giving them something they will enjoy and remember for a long time to come.

Thanks for reading my latest wedding blog post, I am already researching another very interesting wedding news article for next week.
