Wedding Traditions and Old Wives Tales

Over our 25 years as wedding videographers, we have been blessed to witness thousands of couples tie the knot. For many, tradition can play an important part in their big day, whether that is wearing an item of clothing or jewellery that has been passed down through the generations or getting married in a venue that has become precious to the couple and their families. In this blog post we are going to explore some old traditions and see whether they really hold up when it comes to weddings today.

Wedding Traditions In Kilkenny

When we think of wedding traditions there’s one that has stood the test of time:

Something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue!

Something Old: No doubt you all recognise this tradition that has been passed down through the generations. For many, the ‘something old’ is an item of jewellery that has been worn previously by family members or loved ones who have passed on. This tradition is the one we see most by far as brides and grooms keep this ‘something old’ close to their hearts during their wedding day.

Something New: Whilst part of the old tradition, it’s really one most couples don’t have to worry about fulfilling! ‘Something new’ can be your dress, flowers, jewellery or even your hairstyle!

Something Borrowed: If you want to stick to tradition and keep ‘Something Borrowed’ with you on your wedding day, perhaps consider asking a member of your new family to assist with this part of the tradition. A necklace from your sister in law, a brooch from your new mother in law or a memento of a deceased family member from your new family will make them feel like they are really a part of your big day!

Something Blue: Over the past 25 years we have spoken to many of our brides who have opted for a blue garter to fulfill this part of the old tradition. However, you can also opt for jewellery with a blue stone, a touch of blue in your bouquet or a scrap of some blue cloth from clothing that means a lot to you.

Old Wives Tales

No doubt you have heard all the doom and gloom that goes along with some old wives tales that are associated with weddings – just for laughs we have listed some of the most bizarre for you below!

• “Don’t leave any pins in the dress on the morning of the wedding” apparently this was seen as bad luck!
• If a spider is found in the folds of the dress on the morning of the wedding then you’re in for good luck – unless you’re afraid of spiders of course!
• Wearing the veil of a woman who is already happily married will pass their good luck on to you.
• If the groom drops his hat on the day of the wedding, this is considered to be good luck.
• “If you marry in Lent, you are sure to repent” – hmm we’ve just had the busiest spring period ever so we are glad to hear this kind of nonsense has been left behind!
• “It is unlucky to try on your wedding ring prior to being married” – we just can’t see how this was ever a tradition, how were couples expected to buy rings without trying them on?
• “Never take off your wedding ring during the first seven years of your marriage”.
• “Never marry on a day that has a full moon”
• “Any sums of money to be paid during the day should be paid in odd amounts”. If you’re sticking to this tradition, as wedding videographers we would ask that you round up to the nearest hundred 😉

Wedding Planning Tips

Thankfully, in today’s modern Ireland, any traditions we see during wedding ceremonies are for the most part restricted to family tradition. Remember, this is your big day so get out there and start some of your own family traditions!

If you and your loved one are currently planning a wedding and you are considering the services of a professional wedding videographer, the team here at Drangan Video would love to hear from you. As well as traditional, discreet videography, we can also offer drone footage, which will give you something special to look back on for years to come.

How Millennials have changed the Wedding Landscape

Over the past 25 years, Drangan Video has witnessed a huge transformation in the wedding planning process and this, is in a large part down to our fantastic generation of ‘millennials’. In this blog post, I am going to share some of my own insights with you and perhaps provide some tips and tricks for those of you who may feel slightly overwhelmed with the wedding planning process.

Take your time….
If there’s one thing millennials do best it’s never rushing the announcement of their engagement and I think this really takes the pressure off couples in a significant way. In many cases the wedding planning process has already begun before the engagement announcement takes place.

Embrace online tools
Getting married in an era that has technology at its fingertips is one of the fundamental benefits of the millennial age. Wedding planning apps have made tasks so much easier for brides and grooms and are an excellent way to stay on top of your planning without the stress of visiting each supplier and sit-down meetings. Use the Internet to your advantage and cut down on costs and precious time.

Setting Budgets
Perhaps due to recession and rising prices, millennials have become accustomed to budgeting in a really meaningful way. They know that you don’t have to spend a fortune to have the wedding of your dreams and have embraced more alternative décor, catering and venue options.

Your Best Man or Maid of Honour does not have to be Male or Female
This is perhaps one of the nicest developments I have witnessed over the past number of years. If your best friend and most trusted companion is female, does that mean you can’t have them as your best man? Absolutely not! Gender should not be the decision maker when it comes to including the most important people in your wedding party. Throw out that old rulebook and embrace the reality of your friendships, ‘Men of Honour’ and ‘Best Women’ are truly the change we have been waiting for.

Customisation
Customising a theme for your wedding to make it truly unique is a growing trend amongst millennials across Ireland and Europe. Whether you want to use a certain colour scheme throughout the ceremony and reception or go full on ‘themed’ for your big day, you can be sure that your guests will remember your wedding for all the right reasons.

Advice On Booking your Wedding Venue

For those of you who are in the early wedding planning process, we hope you find this blog post interesting and informative. Booking the right venue for you and your intended is probably the most important choice you will make at this early stage. It is with this in mind that we have compiled a list of important questions for you to ask the venue before making that all-important decision.

Whether you are planning to get married in Tipperary or further afield, these questions should assist you with this important first step.

Getting Married In Tipperary

Dates:
Have you set a date in stone or can you be flexible to get the venue you really want? The very first question you need to ask your venue of choice is whether they can accommodate you on your preferred date. Once you have confirmed the venue you can then move on to booking entertainment that is available on the same day.

Budget:
Budget is incredibly important, and you need to know that the venue can deliver everything you need without costs spiraling out of control. Make sure you ask your venue to specify any ‘extras’ that could catch you off guard when the time for payment comes.

Capacity:
For those of you planning a large wedding, you will need to give an approximation of numbers to the venue to ensure they can seat and comfortably accommodate all of your guests for the big day. If they can’t accommodate the numbers you were hoping for, you will have a decision to make. Which is most important to you, your dream venue or a large guest list?

Civil Ceremonies:
If you are planning a civil ceremony and hope to host the ceremony and the celebrations in the same venue, you will need to check that the venue has been registered with the HSE. A full list of HSE approved wedding venues is available on the HSE website.

The Space:
Ask the event coordinator at the venue to give you a tour of the space. If at all possible, ask if you could see the room on the morning of another wedding before the guests arrive. This will give you a good idea of the seating arrangements and the space available in the venue.

Décor:
In most cases the venue will decorate the space for you at no extra cost, however, you may want to add some of your own touches to make it special. Speak with your point of contact and ask if you can be involved in the décor process.

Point of Contact:
To ensure everything runs smoothly throughout the planning process it is always best to have one dedicated point of contact at your venue of choice. Upon your first meeting with the venue you should specify this request and a direct phone number and email address for ease of contact.

Recommendations:
Every venue will have a list of approved venues that they will be happy to share with the bride and groom. This can be a great resource if you are looking for the best entertainment, photographer or car hire service. Drangan Video is proud to be recommended by hotels and venues in Tipperary and throughout Ireland.

Celebrating 25 Years of Wedding Videography

If you had told me 25 years ago that my little videography business would still be going strong in 2019, I may have found it hard to believe, yet here we are today celebrating this incredible milestone!

It goes without saying that this would not be possible without the thousands of couples who have trusted Drangan Video with their precious memories. I’m proud to say that in quite a few cases, I am now filming weddings for the sons and daughters of some of my earlier clients and it is an absolute honour for me that they thought that much of my videography that it’s become a family tradition. A huge thank you to all of the couples over the past 25 years, without you and your love for each other, Drangan Video may not have been so successful. Thank you.

25 years wedding videography

Over the past 25 years, I have seen trends change dramatically, from dress styles to catering and décor. However, there has been one thing that has remained constant – Ireland is a wonderful place to get married. In fact this has actually improved over the past number of years because we can now celebrate all marriages equally, it was a long time coming and a hard fought battle but I’m very proud to be part of a generation that made this change happen. All love is equal and our fellow countrymen and women agree wholeheartedly – to be part of this change in society and to witness it first hand has been one of the most emotional and rewarding parts of my 25 years in business.

As well as changes in wedding trends, I have seen huge advances in videography technology and techniques. Thankfully the cameras we use now at Drangan Video are a far cry from the bulky, heavy video cameras I started out with in the 90’s. Improved editing software, high-resolution videos, hi-tech video equipment and advanced video formatting have contributed massively to the service we provide.

I get to see the wildest corners of Connemara and the busy city lights of Dublin as well as the castles and scenic views of Tipperary and Kilkenny. I can tell you that a working life simply doesn’t get better than this!

Once again I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the couples that have trusted Drangan Video with their memories and I look forward to meeting future generations so we can add another precious layer to those videos.
