Wedding Photographer vs. Wedding Videographer: The Big Show Down

When I first meet with couples, I get asked a lot of questions, and one of the most common questions is ‘should I hire a wedding photographer as well as a wedding videographer?’. Now, as the founder of Drangan Video, I’m obviously going to sing the praises of wedding videos, but here’s something that may surprise you – I think wedding photography is great, too! In fact, I think that if you choose a videographer and photographer that work well together and compliment each other, you’ve got the perfect package. It’s not a case of either/or, as both wedding services offer very different benefits.

Wedding Videography in Ireland

So why hire a wedding videographer in Ireland? Quite simply, I like to think that there are some aspects of the day that work better on video than they do on camera. The speeches, the bride walking down the aisle, the emotion and happiness of the two families coming together, and the cheeky personalities of the littlest guests are just some of the things that I think work better on film.
Wedding videography has evolved rapidly over the years, and I’ve had first hand experiences of these changes from the work I’ve done at Drangan Video. One of the hottest wedding trends today is to have a documentary style video created – and I have to admit, I love it! No matter how prepared and ready you are for your wedding, the day will go by in a flash, believe me! Practically every bride and groom says ‘it went so fast’, and those little details that you thought you’d remember – the look on the groom’s face as he saw you for the first time, the beautiful words of Dad’s speech after dinner – will soon be gone. A wedding video allows you to look back on the day, and relive it. It shows a more realistic version of events, rather than the more posed style that typically comes from photography.

Wedding Photography in Ireland

So, believe it or not, I wouldn’t discourage you from hiring a wedding photographer! I actually think there are many reasons to hire a wedding photographer in Ireland, as there are some parts of the day that work better on camera than they do on video. Wedding photography is a wonderful, unique chance to get some shots of the happy couple against the stunning Irish scenery, it’s a chance to capture the beauty of the wedding dress, and above all it’s a chance to get some classic shots for the wedding album.

And the Winner is….

Well, I have to say wedding videographers are better, don’t I? I don’t want to be a traitor to my craft! However, I really do think that it’s hard to compare the two art forms, as they each offer something different. It’s like comparing a pastry chef with a saucier – ultimately they perform a similar function, but the methods that they use are completely different. I’m a big advocate for having both a photographer and a videographer at weddings, so when couples ask me if they should have both, I always say yes. Of course, at the end of the day it’s entirely your choice, but I’m happy to help.

Building the Perfect Team

Creating the perfect photographer-videographer team isn’t as difficult as you may think! Since launching Drangan Video, I’ve had the privilege of working with some of the most talented wedding photographers in Ireland, and together we’ve helped to produce everlasting memories for brides and grooms all across the country. Call me – Eamon – for more information on my videography packages.

Make This a Truly Memorable Day: 5 Ways to Make Your Wedding Stand Out

I take great pleasure in capturing those special ‘moments of a lifetime’ for you to look back on for years to come.

When hiring my services, the happy couple will often remark that they are looking for something out of the norm, something to take their wedding a bit off the beaten path, something truly memorable. If you are looking for ways to make your own wedding stand out, here are some thoughts to get you started planning a day that will live on in the memories of all who attend.

Choose an Unusual Venue

What do you think of when you picture the classic wedding? Typically, it is set in a church with the celebration taking place in a local venue, complete with all the trimmings. What would happen if you were to choose someplace truly unique to both say your vows and celebrate afterwards?

Couples have chosen to get married in hot air balloons, on historic bridges, in caves, in museums and of course, in castles – where they can also honeymoon after the guests have gone home. It may take some planning to make sure you can book the venue at the time you need but with a bit of foresight and a little patience, you can book a truly memorable venue.

Do Away with Traditions

Another way to be assured your wedding will stand out from those your guests have attended in the past is to do away with some of the expected traditions. Since it is no longer a ‘requirement’ for the bride to wear white, why not choose a colourful and trendy wedding gown? Some brides have opted to do the wedding party in the colours of the rainbow with matching décor at the church and celebration venue.

Others have gone all out with period attire (such as Victorian or Renaissance) whilst others have gone into the future with wedding attire fashioned after futuristic sci-fi flicks such as the character Katniss would wear in the Hunger Games.

Order a Designer Wedding Cake

Everyone expects a multi-tiered wedding cake done up in white with the traditional bride and groom figurines gracing the top. If you do a bit of searching you can find a baker who is also an artist/sculptor and is able to create an amazing wedding cake shaped and decorated as anything from the Eiffel Tower to a Venetian Gondola.

Designer wedding cakes can also be a way to put the finishing touches on the theme you have chosen for your wedding, so get as creative as you like. The only hitch may be finding a baker who can handle this type of artistry, but they can be found so allow yourself ample time to find the perfect cake ‘artist.’

Dance a Choreographed First Dance

When it comes to the first dance at the wedding celebration, many couples take dancing lessons months before the special event. It is traditional to learn to manage a waltz or fox trot, but what about something a little more exciting? Couples often choose a first dance based on a song that is special to their romance and it’s pretty much impossible to waltz to rap. Have you considered hiring a hip hop choreographer to teach you a short choreographed routine to stun your wedding guests? A quick browse through YouTube should give you some great ideas for first dances that really stand out.

5) Make a Grand Exit

Finally, at the end of the day when it is traditional to toss rice on the newlyweds as they drive off into the sunset in a hired limousine, why not change up your transport a bit? Some couples have hired motorbikes for their grand exit whilst others have taken off in balloons or on horseback. Hire a Chinese rickshaw or take off in a helicopter, your choices are only limited by your imagination.

Here’s hoping your wedding will be a day that will stand out and become a great memory that will last a lifetime. With your creativity and my videos, we can make this a day to remember – a day that will live on for years to come.

Kilkenny Wedding Video Highlights : Eimear & John’s Happy Day

The summer has come and gone it wasn’t the hottest season ever recorded but that didn’t dull the spirits of all the happy wedding videos which I had the pleasure of recording and producing during summer 2015.  Once again this year a huge amount of Kilkenny brides to be !!  have said yes to Drangan Video as their preferred choice of wedding videographer, Eimear & John are one such couple here is little snippet from their wedding film.

I have lovely memories of Eimear & John’s big day, Eimear was a lovely happy bubbly bride with a warm friendly smile, John was also a happy easygoing  groom, he is a very witty guy so we had some good fun during the day.

My day began with  a visit to Eimear’s parent’s house to grab some footage of the girls preparing for the happy day, we were lucky with the weather sunny and dry. Having already recording Niamh’s wedding 3 years ago I was confident that we were in for another  fun day, this time Niamh was not the center of attention she was busy attending to her little sisters every need. The Gaffney family are so welcoming and friendly  it was a pleasure to be in their company once again.

The ceremony took place in Church of the Holy Cross Cuffesgrange, the church is a busy wedding ceremony venue and is a popular choice by many Kilkenny brides.   The interior decorative  has been replaced following a comprehensive renovation programme undertaken under the direction of Monsignor James Carey (n. d.) in accordance with the Second Vatican Council (1963-5).  The church stands proud on an elevated site overlooking the green decorative pastures of Callan/Kilkenny,  its one of my favorite wedding ceremony venues in Kilkenny.

After the ceremony we headed for Kilkenny city which is Ireland’s most historic and beautiful medieval city. The use of the term city is a point of some dispute especially by us Tipperary people who are slightly in aw !!  of the marble city. Kilkenny people claim its city status because of a medieval charter it received 800 years ago. Kilkenny’s centre is based on the west bank of the River Nore around Parliament Street, Hight Street and the Parade, with Rothe House at one end and Kilkenny Castle on the hill at the other.

In recent years Kilkenny City has become a hub for arts, crafts and design. With its great nightlife and restaurant scene Kilkenny makes an excellent base for exploring Ireland’s ‘sunny southeast’.

The Wonderful Newpark Hotel Kilkenny :

Eimear & John choose the Newpark for their wedding reception, it is my favourite wedding venue the staff are so helpfull and friendly, its a quality wedding venue and is the number one choice by Kilkenny and Tipperary brides.  Set on thirty acres of parkland and with award-winning landscaped gardens, the Newpark Hotel provides the perfect backdrop for an amazing wedding day.  The  Dunmore Suite can cater for up to 160 guests and the Glendine Suite can cater for up to 130 guests for the main wedding meal. For weddings over 180 guests both suites combine to offer the perfect setting for a larger wedding party.

Eimear and John booked our top package the  Diamond  which is one of five individual  wedding packages available from Drangan Video for 2015/2016/2017.  this all inclusive package covers the full day beginning  with bridal preps in the morning, recording finishes at 11pm that evening.

Once again a big thank you to Eimear & John for asking me to film their special day, it was a wonderful wedding I really enjoyed myself, it didnt seem like work.

Rachel & Ian Happy Wedding Celebrations Hotel Kilkenny

Kilkenny city is one of the most popular  wedding destinations in Ireland  it has so much to offer, wedding venues to numerous to mention which are  complemented by beautiful historical attractions and an abundance of scenic wedding  photo locations through out the county.  Here at Drangan Video our bookings for weddings in KIlkenny are very strong  for the next two years as more and more Brides say yes to a professional wedding videographer.  Rachel and Ian are one such couple !! here is a clip from their wedding DVD.

The story begins with the all exciting bridal preps which took place in Callan  which is sometimes  described  as a satellite town to Kilkenny.  Rachel is the third member of the Dalton family to avail of my videographer services, thanks to  Siobhaun and Gemma for the referral to baby sister Rachel.

There is nothing more enjoyable than a visit to the  house in the morning  for bridal preps everyone in high spirits the mood is infectious, it never fails in giving me a  happy mood boost.  After getting the usual  fun shots on camera I headed for Kilkenny city to get set up for the ceremony.

The wedding ceremony took place in St. John’s Church opposite McDonnagh Junction  is just one of many magnificent wedding ceremony venues in Kilkenny City,  it was built 1903 on the site of an earlier church,  relatively new.  Fr. Willie Purcell  is popular wedding celebrant  and well known for his somewhat light hearted style of  wedding mass.  Ian and the boys arrived in good time and were pretty relaxed, “not a bother on them”.

Butler House Kilkenny City :

After the ceremony we visited Butler House for the photo session with the bridal party.  Butler House is a beautiful location for wedding video and photo shoots it offers the best of both worlds. Through the rear door you are on Patrick Street which is only a short step from the central hub and commercial center of the city where you will find an array of shops bars and restaurants.

We headed out the front door which took us to the internationally renowned Butler House Walled Gardens which are  an ideal location for capturing stunning wedding video footage.

Our final destination was Hotel Kilkenny for the wedding reception, Rachel & Ian  the new Mr & Mrs Goodman were in the mood for celebrating and what better venue than Hotel Kilkenny.

Upon entering Hotel Kilkenny you immediately feel the wonderful warm atmosphere which is a credit to the Griffin Group of Hotels. Rachel & Ian enjoyed a lively  wedding reception in the Skyline Suite which can cater for up to 400 guests. There is a fantastic view of Kilkenny City from the skyline, the city lights provided a wonderful backdrop for the late night celebrations.

Rachel & Ian are a lovely couple, it was a pleasure to have been their wedding videographer, for me I felt more like a guest than a wedding supplier. This wedding video clip has already been shared on facebook and is receiving glowing reviews from family and friends.

Thanks for stopping by, more wedding news next week.
