Things you might not have considered on your Wedding Day

In this blog post, we are going to address some items you may not have considered in the planning process for your big day. Already think you have everything covered? Perhaps have a read through our tips; hopefully we’ll have mentioned something you will find helpful on the day!

1. What do I do with my engagement ring prior to the ceremony?
Did you know that it’s tradition to wear your engagement ring on your right hand on the day of the wedding? Once you have exchanged rings at the ceremony you can then move the engagement ring back to the ring finger on your left hand for the reception and celebrations.

2. Who is responsible for lifting the bride’s veil during the ceremony?
If you’re a stickler for tradition, then you have two options here. If you are being ‘given away’ or accompanied up the aisle by someone dear to you, you can have them lift your veil when you reach your intended. Alternatively, you can ask your fiancé to lift your veil when the ceremony begins.

3. Left or right?
What sides of the aisle do the bride and groom stand? If you’re opting for a church wedding, tradition stipulates if you are standing facing the altar, the bride stands on the left and the groom on the right. It’s important to note though that you can stand wherever you like at any non-religious ceremony.

4. Can I have a catholic ceremony without the mass?
This may come as a surprise to many, but the answer is yes! Perhaps you want to shorten the time spent in church for any number of reasons. You may have family that are not religious, or you and your partner may be of different religious beliefs. This option to marry within the church without the accompanying mass is an option that not many couples are aware of. Speak to your local clergy for more information on this option.

5. Does our chosen venue allow us to take photographs during the ceremony?
It’s important that you double check with your venue about their photo policy. In most cases the church or civil ceremony venue will have no problem with photographers doing their thing during the ceremony but you could get a surprise on the day if you don’t ask in advance. Some churches may have a ‘no photo’ policy, so it’s important that you know this before finalizing your booking.
6. Disability Access
In most cases, venues across Ireland today will be fully equipped for those who may need special assistance on the day. If you or one of your guests has a wheelchair or requires alternative arrangement, it’s important to speak with your venue in advance to confirm they can be accommodated.

Questions for the Wedding Cake Baker

In this blog post we’re going to talk about the wedding cake and the questions you should be asking the baker before making your purchase. Over the years we have seen a huge change in wedding cake trends, from traditional 3 or 4 tier cakes painstakingly iced with lace detail to cupcakes, chocolate cakes and even cakes made solely of wheels of cheese! The questions we ask below, should allow you to make an informed decision on the type of cake you want and ensure that you know what you’re getting well in advance of the big day.

Can the baker give you samples to try?
You don’t buy a car without test-driving it and you certainly don’t spend hundreds (sometimes thousands) of Euros on a cake if you haven’t tasted the merchandise first! Ask the baker if they can give you some sample cakes to take away and taste at home with your loved one before you make that all important decision.

Can you do this?
You may have seen a cake elsewhere that really caught your eye, whether at a friends wedding or on social media. If you really have your heart set on a certain type of cake, we would advise you to provide as many images to your baker as possible. They should be able to tell you immediately whether they can accommodate your request.

When is the cake baked?
This is one of the most important questions you need to ask your baker. You will want to ensure your cake is as fresh as possible when you and your guests tuck in! In most cases, the cake will be baked approx. a week before the wedding, if it’s baked any earlier it can be ‘too’ fresh and difficult to ice. However, making the baker aware that you want your cake to be as fresh as possible is always a good idea.

What kind of delivery service do you offer?
Let’s assume your wedding is on a weekend and the reception is taking place more than 20km from the baker’s premises. Can they deliver directly to the venue for you on the morning of the wedding or the night before? If not, can they provide you with a delivery option? What is the cost of delivery? Make sure you ask these questions well in advance to avoid any last minute panic!

Is the price negotiable?
If you don’t ask, you don’t get, right? Never be afraid to ask the baker if this is their best price, even a small discount can make a difference to your wedding budget!

Other helpful information:

• Does the baker have a portfolio they can show you?
• Are references or testimonials available on their website?
• Check out the baker’s social media page to see what previous customers have to say.
• Maybe you want more than one type of cake? Ask your baker about different flavours for different tiers of your cake.
• If you opt for cupcakes, make sure order more than needed to ensure everyone enjoying your celebrations gets a full cupcake.
• Agree on a final price including delivery with your baker. Make sure to ask if there are any extra charges so you can budget for these in advance.

Celebrating 25 Years of Wedding Videography

If you had told me 25 years ago that my little videography business would still be going strong in 2019, I may have found it hard to believe, yet here we are today celebrating this incredible milestone!

It goes without saying that this would not be possible without the thousands of couples who have trusted Drangan Video with their precious memories. I’m proud to say that in quite a few cases, I am now filming weddings for the sons and daughters of some of my earlier clients and it is an absolute honour for me that they thought that much of my videography that it’s become a family tradition. A huge thank you to all of the couples over the past 25 years, without you and your love for each other, Drangan Video may not have been so successful. Thank you.

25 years wedding videography

Over the past 25 years, I have seen trends change dramatically, from dress styles to catering and décor. However, there has been one thing that has remained constant – Ireland is a wonderful place to get married. In fact this has actually improved over the past number of years because we can now celebrate all marriages equally, it was a long time coming and a hard fought battle but I’m very proud to be part of a generation that made this change happen. All love is equal and our fellow countrymen and women agree wholeheartedly – to be part of this change in society and to witness it first hand has been one of the most emotional and rewarding parts of my 25 years in business.

As well as changes in wedding trends, I have seen huge advances in videography technology and techniques. Thankfully the cameras we use now at Drangan Video are a far cry from the bulky, heavy video cameras I started out with in the 90’s. Improved editing software, high-resolution videos, hi-tech video equipment and advanced video formatting have contributed massively to the service we provide.

I get to see the wildest corners of Connemara and the busy city lights of Dublin as well as the castles and scenic views of Tipperary and Kilkenny. Once again I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of the couples that have trusted Drangan Video with their memories and I look forward to meeting future generations so we can add another precious layer to those videos.

What to do after you get Engaged

At this time of the year we take great pleasure in speaking with newly engaged couples who received proposals over the festive period. It’s such an exciting time for our Brides and Grooms to be! In this article we are going to talk about the very first things you need to do as a newly engaged couple to assist with the wedding planning process.

Wedding Planning Tips

1. Share and celebrate
First and foremost you should be sharing your good news with your very closest friends and family. Take some time out to celebrate before you get stuck into the planning process and enjoy this happy time.

2. Save and save some more
If you haven’t already started saving for your big day, now is the time to do so. We would highly recommend opening a credit union account in your locality and commit to putting away a little bit every week. If you decide to go with a traditional bank account, look for a bank that offers little or no fees on your savings.

3. Sizing of your ring
There’s a good chance that unless you’ve gone shopping together for a ring, you may need to make adjustments to the size. Visit a reputable jeweller, preferably the same outlet in which the ring was purchased and ask them for advice and assistance with the sizing of your ring. While you’re here, you should also have your ring appraised and request a certificate of value to include in your home insurance.

4. Decide on your bridal party
There’s no time like the present when it comes to deciding on who will be part of your big day. Take the time to discuss choices with your partner and agree on the individuals you would like to include in your bridal and grooms party. You may opt for a Maid of Honour and one bridesmaid or a large group of great friends and family, the choice is entirely yours!

5. Get a handle on numbers
Before you start looking at venues, it’s a good idea to have an idea of the numbers that will be attending the wedding, reception and evening party. There’s no need to make a detailed guest list at this early stage but a rough idea of the attendance numbers will greatly help when searching for a venue.

6. It’s time to start looking at venues
This is one of the stages that our couples enjoy most! Take the time to read online reviews and reach out to other couples that have celebrated in the venues you are considering. Arrange meetings with the wedding coordinators at your top 4 or 5 preferred venues and don’t be afraid to negotiate! Remember, weekday weddings greatly reduce all the costs associated with your big day.

7. Choose your vendors
Now that you have your venue booked (for the ceremony and the reception), it’s time to start approaching vendors for quotes. Florists, car rental, entertainment, photographers and videographers should all have a number of packages they can offer to suit every budget.

8. Don’t forget the dress!
Shopping for your dress, bridesmaid’s dresses, suits and tuxedos can be incorporated into a fun day out for both parties. Take your time and enjoy the time spent choosing the outfit of your choice.

Planning an Outdoor Wedding in Ireland

As we head into Summer 2019, we find that more and more couples are hoping to incorporate the outdoors into their big day. Perhaps the memories of our fantastic summer in 2018 have made us all a little bit more optimistic about our Irish weather! Whilst the Irish weather is incredibly unpredictable, it is still very possible for you to plan and enjoy an Irish outdoor wedding ceremony or reception party. We’ve put together a list of some of our favourite outdoor venues in Ireland for you and your intended to explore.

Ballyvolane House, Cork

Ballyvolane House is one of the most picturesque venues in Ireland. Beautifully landscaped gardens, lakes and woodland, make this the number one choice for many of our Brides and Grooms. Should the weather deteriorate in any way, the team at Ballyvolane House can offer you a number of indoor alternatives.

Harvey’s Point, Donegal

Harvey’s Point in Donegal is an incredible location to say ‘I Do’, whether you decide to exchange vows indoors or lakeside. The attention to detail shown by the Harvey’s Point events team is second to none and you can be assured they’ll make your day one to remember, whatever the weather!

Tipperary Bride Mount Juliet
Glenview Hotel, Wicklow

The Glenview Hotel in County Wicklow offers you everything you need both indoor and out for civil ceremonies and wedding receptions. In fact, the Glenview have gone one step further and won’t charge you any extra to host your civil ceremony on their grounds if you have also booked the reception here.

The Haven Hotel, Waterford

The Haven Hotel in Waterford is situated in Dunmore East and will make a wonderful backdrop for your wedding photographs and videography. What we love about this place is its proximity to the beach, which is perfect for those unique wedding shots. The hotel is fully equipped and certified for outdoor ceremonies on the lawn and can cater for up to 250 guests.

Kilshane House, Tipperary

Kilshane House is a breath-taking Regency house with a traditional conservatory that is perfect for those who may want the best of both worlds on their wedding day. The hotel has put a lot of thought into their outdoor ceremonies and offer a floating pagoda on their very own lake or lakeside in one of their secret garden locations. You really couldn’t ask for a better start to your married life!
