Getting Married in a Heatwave

It’s hard to believe that only 3 months ago we were struggling with snowdrifts, frozen pipes and in some cases being unable to travel for weeks. Fast-forward to June and Ireland is experiencing the hottest summer since 1976, not that anyone here at Drangan Video is complaining about that!
Tracy and Adrian were married in Graine Co. Kilkenny on one of hottest days of 2018,  they coped very well with the heatwave and enjoyed the fabulous  weather.

The happy couple stopped off at the Millennium Park in Freshford for a few quick photos under the shade of the mature trees. Tracy and Adrian enjoyed a cool  wedding reception in the wonderful air conditioned Hotel kilkenny.

With the current weather in mind we thought we could address some of the difficulties a heatwave can present for those who are getting married in Ireland over the next few weeks. In this article we provide tips and tricks for keeping cool and looking your very best through even the very highest of temperatures.

• Keep your guests cool
Consider getting in touch with your wedding venue and asking them to provide cooling summer drinks for your guests upon arrival. The norm here in Ireland is tea/coffee, wine and maybe some biscuits or canapés upon arrival, not all so suitable for an Irish heatwave. Try welcoming your guests with summer fruit cocktails, iced juices and summer berries.
• Protect against the sun
All those involved in the bridal party should make sure they are fully protected by wearing a high SPF throughout the day. You could also consider adding sun cream and cooling sprays to the bathroom hampers for your guests. You can be assured that they will be delighted with your thoughtfulness.
• Comfortable footwear
If it looks like the day is going to be a scorcher, we would advise investing in some cooling and comfortable footwear. Heels can become quite uncomfortable in the searing heat. Think flip-flops or sandals to ensure comfort throughout the day.
• Mass booklets to the rescue
Make sure everyone of your guests gets a mass booklet. These will make great hand fans during the ceremony.

If you are lucky enough to have a venue that offers an outdoor area for you to celebrate, there are a number of small touches you can offer that will make your party more comfortable:

• Citronella candles – these lemon scented candles will keep the bugs and mosquitos away whilst also adding a wonderful atmosphere to your outdoor space.
• Metal chair covers – if your venue has outdoor seating it may be an idea to get in touch with them before the big day and enquire whether this seating is metal or wooden. If metal, ask your venue to provide cushions or chair covers to ensure guests don’t burn themselves when sitting down.
• Parasols – provide umbrellas and parasols for guests to avoid over heating.
• Set up a sun stand – a little stand with all the essentials for your guests. Sun cream, flip-flops, hats and plenty of water.

For the bridal party
A lot of preparation goes into getting ready on the morning of the wedding, between hair, makeup and other beauty treatments it’s important to prepare for the heat to ensure the effect lasts all day long.

• Primer -wear a strong primer under your wedding makeup to ensure it stays in place in even the strongest of temperatures.
• Make sure the foundation you are using contains a high SPF.
• Ask your maid of honour or one of the bridesmaids to keep finishing powder or blotting paper in a clutch or handbag.

The most important advice we can give to brides and grooms during this wonderfully hot summer is to keep hydrated. It’s easy to forget, particularly once the celebrations are in full swing, that alcohol does dehydrate our bodies. Offer water to all guests with each purchase at the bar.

We hope you enjoy your wedding in the sun and make the very most of this exceptional summer.
