The Maid of Honours Role in the Big Day

As the Maid of Honour on your friend’s big day, it will be your responsibility to ensure the Bride wants for nothing and is totally oblivious to any panic that may be going on in the background. In this article we look at how you can take your Maid of Honour duties to the next level and have guests and family marvelling at your calm demeanour and precise organizational skills. You may be panicking on the inside, but by following the tips below you can be assured of a trouble-free day!

1. In the weeks leading up to the big day, take it upon yourself to make a personal phone call to each of the bridal suppliers, include the videographer, the photographer, florist, ceremony venue and reception venue and leave them with your number. This will take great pressure off the Bride and will ensure you are kept up to date on any last minute changes that may occur.

2. Also make sure to extend a phone call to each member of the bridal party, including but not limited to the groomsman, bridesmaids, ushers and parents of any children who may be partaking in the wedding ceremony. Make it clear that if anyone needs anything in the lead up to the big day or if anyone has any questions, that they can contact you directly.

3. Regularly check in with the Bride to see if she needs assistance with any last minute plans and assure her that you can take up any challenge that may arise. After all you are there to make sure her day goes as smoothly as possible!

The day itself is going to be busy and you will need your wits about you to ensure everything goes as planned. Don’t sweat the small stuff and know that you can’t plan for every eventuality; some surprises will happen that goes without saying and some may even add to the happiness of the day! That said, here are some useful tips that you can keep in your armoury:

4. Wedding Day Appointments – By having a clear itinerary made out in advance you can ensure that all members of the bridal party can keep to their appointments on the morning of the wedding. Perhaps you can organize transport to and from the hairdressers if necessary or arrange a timeline for each of the bridesmaids to have their make-up done. A schedule will help not just the bridal party but also the professionals providing the services on the morning.

5. Make sure everyone gets a good breakfast! Now, we’re not suggesting for a moment that you should don your apron and cook up a feast for such a large gathering; however, it may be advisable to organize someone else who can do this for you on the morning of the wedding. It’s going to be a long day and will most likely be the evening before you all sit down to enjoy a meal. A good breakfast will set you all up for the day and will allay any crankiness that may come with hunger pangs!

6. Carry an emergency kit in your clutch or handbag – we can’t stress this enough! The emergency kit can include:
• Clear nail varnish
• Sewing needle
• Thread
• Plasters
• Deodorant
• Tights
• Small scissors

In the lead up to the big day there will of course be so much more for you to do, the great thing about the wedding day itself is that all the plans have already been made and confirmed and you can relax and enjoy the day with your very best friend. Let her know that you are at her beck and call and that you are willing and excited to help out in any way you possibly can. By the time the evening comes around you will be able to party like everyone else and pat yourself on the back for a job very well done indeed!

The use of Facebook and social media devices at weddings

One great advantage of been a  wedding videographer  in Tipperary and Kilkenny  is that I get to attend a large amount of weddings in many different venues.  I am always interested in the  changing trends that have come about over the last few years, now a days  nearly all wedding guests  are armed with some sort of video recording  device, smart phones, phablets, ipads, pocket cameras with wifi, you name it the list goes on  so Bride & Groom to be, look out  be fore you know it your wedding day could be unfolding to the world on facebook and other social media pages.

The use of Facebook and social media devices  at weddings: is a debatable  subject.  On one hand  you have couples who will love the idea of  huge exposure on Facebook, Twitter and social media pages.   I have heard of a Hotel in America that  is offering to supply a company whose job it is to manage all social media posting on your big day , they would more than likely stream line posts from the wedding guests to achieve the best saturation on line.  On the other hand there are couples who  where guests and were asked to refrain from using their smart phones during the ceremony, this would be common practice at some celebrity weddings in ireland, some times the celebrant will ask the guests to power off the mobiles, just in case of a ring tone during the ceremony.

Here at Drangan Video the use of facebook and social media, plays an important role for me as a wedding videographer. I offer sharing on facebook, twitter, youtube, vimeo and google +  at no extra cost with any  of my 5 wedding video packages.  A short  4 minute video highlights clip will be shared on line  but only with the permission of the couple.

We are all aware of the role that Facebook  plays at weddings in Ireland now,  it is a matter of consideration for the Bride & Groom during the wedding planning process.  Many couples would prefer to wait for the Professional Wedding Video and photos before sharing on Facebook,  the advice for guests is to try to honor the feelings of the couple by asking them if its ok to share wedding clips on social media.

 1. Play it safe.

When you’re the guest, it’s best to avoid whipping out your phone until you know what the couple has planned.

2. Once you know the plan, respect it.

If the couple has asked you to refrain from taking photos on your phone, follow their rules. “First and foremost, you’re a guest at this wedding, so be respectful of the fact that they’re paying a big chunk of money for professional wedding video and photos to be captured on the day  But if they’ve created a hashtag just for the big day, go ahead and tweet away.

3. Don’t go overboard.

If you’re at a wedding where social media use has been approved, you should still keep yourself in check. “Less is more when it comes to being a guest,”  “Don’t upload 90 unedited photos.” or video clips. As with any big celebration, wedding guests tend to let loose as the night goes on, putting the phone away after dinner is served so as to avoid embarrassing anyone is a good idea.

4. Enjoy the moment firsthand.

But most of all,  make sure you enjoy the event as it’s happening in front of you, instead of through a screen. “Share those memories,”  “But be sure to put the phone away and enjoy the day that the couple have put so much time and money into planning.”

Charlene and Jason Tie The knot In Pallaskenry Limerick

It was a pleasure to have been the videographer for the wedding of Charlene and Jason who were married in St. Mary’s Church Pallaskenry, Limerick in July 2014, it was a typical

Wedding Bunratty Folk Park Limerick

limerick wedding great fun and all guests very friendly and up for a good time. Charlene and Jason were a smashing couple to work with, as far as filming was concerned I just did my own thing with absolutely  no direction from this very laid back limerick Bride and Groom.

The wedding film kicks off at the Radisson Blu Limerick on the Ennis Road, I arrived at the hotel two hours before the wedding ceremony in plenty of time to grab all the excitement of the girls getting on with the bridal preparations.  I have recorded a few weddings in the Radisson Blu and I always  enjoy my visits, the staff are so helpful and accommodating towards videographer and photographer which is a big plus,  there is always a decent lunch menu option available in the bar which is also a treat when the hunger pangs set in.

Pallaskenry is situated about 24km west of limerick City close to the river Shannon Estuary its a lovely tidy  village, St. Mary’s Church is a great setting for a wedding ceremony a well maintained church with plenty of space and lots of natural sunlight.  After the ceremony the happy bride and groom released a pair of white doves into a clear blue sky and a big cheer from their guests, a nice video shot.

One of the highlights of the day as the wedding videographer was stopping off at Bunratty Castle & Folk Park for a video shoot with the bridal party, the highlights clip features shots of Charlene and the girls sampling a tasty pint of Guinness and the creamy head which remained  on their lips, all the video footage was totally natural relaxed and not in any way set up. Bunratty Park is a popular tourist venue in Limerick and of coarse its also an ideal location for wedding photographers and videographers, I love shooting video there.

Thanks to Charlene & Jason for choosing Drangan video to shoot and produce their wedding film, it was another fab Limerick wedding and Im looking forward to many more in and around  the south west of Ireland during 2015/2016.  The above highlights have already been shared on my Drangan video facebook page ,      Google+     and     Vimeo

Fun Clonmel Wedding Video With Cyrstal Swing

I really like local wedding videos in Clonmel sure its only a 15 min drive from here in  Fethard.  The following video highlights clip is that of Marian Dempsey and Derek Kennedy  it

Wedding Video Dundrum House Hotel
Wedding Video Dundrum House Hotel

was a really enjoyable wedding, one of the many highlights of the day was the surprise appearance of Cyrstal Swing as the wedding band in Dundrum House Hotel, Cashel Tipperary, the couple had not reveled the name of their wedding band, so it was a great surprise when they appeared on stage for the very first dance. The video clip below begins with a very energetic Derek Burke introducing the bride & Groom for the first dance.

Nearly all my weddings so far for 2014 are local in Clonmel, Cashel, Thurles and Kilkenny and its not fair to pick any wedding as been better than the rest, Marian’s & Derek’s wedding really stands out for me as been a happy relaxed and fun day.  My duties began at 11am  with the  setting up of cameras and microphones in St. Marys church Irishtown in Clonmel,  this beautiful church was built in 1850 replacing the original thatched chapel, which stood on the same site in Irishtown since 1660. Plans for the present building were prepared and agreed in November 1836. The church, dedicated to Our Lady under the title of the Assumption, was completed and blessed by Most Rev. Dr. O’Brien, Bishop of Waterford, on the 12th October 1856.  It is a popular Wedding Ceremony for brides in Tipperary especially in and around the greater Clonmel area, it is one of the most beautiful churches in Tipperary.

After setting up in the Church I made way on foot to Marian’s Parent’s house which is also in Irishtown a 3 min walk, Marian and the girls were in full wedding mode,  excitement was high and the sun was shining outside. Nick O Keeffe was the Wedding photographer and it was great to be working with him once again he is  former Weddings Online award winner, his work is amazing and he is quick witted and good fun. Marie Hickey of Bridal Hair By Marie was on duty from an early hour she is also a Weddings Online Award Winner she is a hair expert. Makeup was by Yvonne Maher who is also another award winner with Weddings online, only the very best for this beautiful Clonmel Bride.  I was delighted with the footage of the bridal preps, Marian has a lovely warm smile she has to be one of the happiest brides that I ever had the pleasure of working with her good humor rubbed off on everyone making us all feel relaxed and ready for a fab wedding.

The wedding Ceremony in St Marys Church was performed by Fr. Bobby Power who a well know Wedding Celebrant in Clonmel and South Tipperary, he has an easygoing and friendly approach to performing his duties, the ceremony was very much enhanced by the wonderful Mimosa Trio who provided a lovely selection of instrumental and vocal pieces during the ceremony. On our way to Dundrum House Hotel we stopped off just outside Cashel and entered huge green field which lay in the shadow of the famous Rock Of Cashel, we did consider dropping in to Hore Abbey but the field was a better choice as there was a clear view of the Rock Of Cashel anyway I think Hore Abbey is more suitable for Winter Weddings.  We had to climb a gate to enter the field which was no problem for this athletic couple, it was well worth the effort the video footage was lovely, green grass, blue sky and a gentle breeze which added interest to the veil and dress.

Dundrum House Hotel
Dundrum House Hotel

Dundrum House Hotel is one of the best known wedding venues in Tipperary .  The Galteemore Suite is the centre piece of the wedding day celebrations in Dundrum House, the ballroom is conveniently placed on the raised ground floor of this authentic Georgian Manor where spectacular views of the golf course and hinterland greet you upon arrival. With enough seated room for 350 guests a large bar, raised stage, so another great choice be Marian & Derek.  On the way into the hotel we used the Cherry Blossom tree in the hotel grounds which was in full bloom on May 3rd, we got some nice footage of the couple strolling along the pathway which was decorated with a carpet of falling cherry blossoms, you could not buy this, it was perfect.

So its back to the highlight of the evening a very special wedding band.   Crystal Swing are a new wave Country and Western and Country and Irish musical group, from Lisgoold, County Cork, Ireland. The family group is made up of mother Mary Murray-Burke and her children Dervla and Derek Burke, they are not alone well know in Ireland but in many other parts of the world also. The video clip features Derek enjoying the attention of my video camera. They are a really lively act and would enhance any wedding celebration, they are not available as a mainstream Wedding Band because of other recording commitments, Marian & Derek were chatting with Mary Burke on facebbok and a frienship was formed  and Crystal Swing offered to be their wedding band.

I would like to wish Marian & Derek all the very best for the future, it was an absolute pleasure to have been their Wedding videographer and thanks also allowing Drangan Video to share this Highlights Clip in this blog post and on the Drangan Video Facebook Page.
