Making the Most of your Wedding Morning

As a wedding videographer  I have been fortunate  to have been  part of  so many wedding morning preparations throughout Tipperary, Kilkenny and up and down the country, each  wedding is  special and unique for every individual bride. I have picked up some tips, advice and ideas  that will help  to ensure that your wedding morning is a stress free fun event.

More often than not, the morning of any wedding can be a blur when we look back at it, running to the hairdressers, dressing the flower girls, making sure everyone is where they should be, checking in with suppliers, dealing with last minute arrivals… the list goes on!

In more recent times, we are seeing brides and grooms taking a more relaxed approach and striving to get all the last minute preparations completed the day before the wedding where possible, so they can enjoy the morning build-up and everything that goes with it.

It is with this in mind that we have compiled a list of novel ideas for you and your bride or groom to enjoy on the morning of your wedding. It goes without saying, that if you’re a traditionalist, you won’t be doing these activities together, but you can certainly enjoy them with your bridal party, family or grooms party.

Bridal preparations for wedding in Tipperary
Pamper yourself

Instead of running all over town to get to the hairdressers or to visit your favourite makeup artist, why not bring them to your home or venue of choice? By asking your makeup artist and hairdresser to work their wonders in comfortable surroundings, you can enjoy being pampered with your bridal party in a relaxed atmosphere, and will never have to worry about dodging those raindrops!

Splash out on a champagne breakfast

Let’s be honest, there’s not a bride or groom on the planet that won’t enjoy a special breakfast on the morning of the wedding. Perhaps ask an ouside caterer to prepare something light and nourishing for you and your companions or maybe call upon an obliging relative to put together something special. Not too much champagne now, you have a long day ahead ?

Get everything ready the night before

If you truly want to be as relaxed as possible on the morning of your wedding, why not get everything ready the night before? Have all the dresses, or suits ready and waiting to be worn, polish those shoes, lay out any jewellery, make those last minute phone calls, pack your overnight bag, do a quick tidy up so the photographer can get snapping as soon as they arrive, and then breathe and relax….it’s all in hand. Now you can take the morning in your stride, no rushing about, and arrive at your wedding ceremony rested and calm.

Pop on some music

There’s nothing that can soothe the nerves or add to an occasion like your favourite tunes. Perhaps consider preparing a playlist for your intended to listen to on the morning of the wedding, what better way to start the day?

Be comfortable

On the morning of the wedding, before you don your suit or dress, it will do you the world of good to be as comfortable as you can. Invest in some comfy robes for the bride and bridal party and some man-size slippers or robes for the gents.

How big, how much? Our Guide to what you’ll need on the Big Day

The time has come for you to start ordering services, flowers, food and drink for the big day, and we can fully empathise with the panic that sometimes goes hand in hand with this process. With this in mind we have put together a quick guide that we hope you’ll find helpful.

Ordering the Cake

Under normal circumstances, ordering a cake should be as straight forward as ordering a coffee. However, when it comes to wedding planning, you really have to be thinking on your feet. When the time comes to speak to your local baker or wedding specialist, you’ll most likely already have a budget set aside for your wedding cake, but have you considered the size or the numbers?

Planning advice and tips for your wedding in Kilkenny

When ordering your wedding cake, the following calculations should be taken into consideration:

With the following tier sizes you should easily be able to calculate how many guests can indulge in your gorgeous wedding cake:

Square Tiers

12”x18” – This whopping tier size will ensure up to 55 of your wedding guests will get a slice of cake.
11”x15” – You should comfortably feed 35 guests with a generous slice of cake.
9”x13” – Perfect for a smaller wedding or to stack on top of a large tier for those of you who are celebrating with a large group of friends or family, this tier will feed 20-25 people.
7”x11” – Generally this size will be used with larger tiers and perhaps another smaller tier on top. Used alone, this size will comfortably allow 15 of your guests to indulge in a tasty treat.

Round Tiers

10” – A 10” round cake will serve up to 25 guests.
8” – This smaller size will serve up to 10 people.
6” – A tidy 6” tier will comfortably allow 6 of your wedding guests to indulge in a piece of your celebratory cake.

For those of you who are celebrating with larger numbers, simply start out with the larger tier sizes and stack a smaller tier or two on top to reach the number of servings you require.

Calculating drinks for the toast or wine for the table

We often talk to brides and grooms who have miscalculated the amount of alcoholic beverages required for the evening of their wedding. In most cases, guests will buy their own drinks for the night, however it is customary to provide wine at the table during the meal or treat your guests to a drink for the toasts and speeches. How to calculate what to order can be a bit of a minefield, so we hope that this helps with your planning!

Wine for the table.

A general rule of thumb to consider is 2 glasses per person, per table. This will equate to half a bottle per person. Then you have to figure out which is more popular, red or white?

Autumn, winter and early spring weddings:
This is the time of year when guests are more likely to drink red wine. When the weather is cold and the evenings are dark, a glass of red wine is more likely to be chosen than a glass of white or sparkling wine.

Late spring and summer weddings:
As you would expect, with warmer weather and long bright evenings, we are more likely to opt for a more refreshing drink. In this case, you should assume that the majority of guests will opt for a white wine, a spritzer or a sparkling wine if it is on offer.

Common worries on the lead up to your wedding day

Over the years we have had the opportunity to speak with countless brides and grooms on the lead up to their wedding day and we have come to recognise some of ‘silent worries’ than can make them lose sleep at night. You know the things I’m talking about, the drunken uncle, the invite etiquette, the seating arrangements, the speech….. the list goes on. These are common worries amongst brides and grooms, however, sometimes we are a little reluctant to speak about these concerns for fear of offending someone important to us. Below you will read some of the most common worries we have come to recognise and our tips on how you can combat these issues.

If you’re currently planning your wedding and worrying about how best to capture the big day on video, please feel free to give me a call here at Drangan Video and I will do everything in my power to put your mind at ease. I offer wedding videography in Cork, Kilkenny, Tipperary and will travel to any small town or village in Ireland, no matter how remote. No need to worry with us!

Wedding Day worries

So let’s get started then…

Is it a bit rude to throw ourselves an engagement party? Should someone else host it for us?

Not at all! This is your celebration, so don’t worry about celebrating that in the way you feel most comfortable. Now if a family member or friend has suggested hosting it for you, by all means jump at this opportunity and accept their gracious offer. However, if you find that no one has offered and you would really like to throw a party to celebrate, you should absolutely go for it! Go big and throw yourselves a party to end all parties!

I want a small intimate wedding, but the in-laws have other ideas! I suppose I better go with what the family wants?

This is another common concern we hear about a lot. It is time for you to remember whose day this is……you and your new bride or groom. In-laws will have their input as will your own family no doubt, however, this should not in any way compromise the plans you want for your big day. When the day comes around, the family will recognise that it’s the two of you who matter most and extended family or friends will be happy to congratulate you at a later date. A compromise could be reached by hosting an intimate ceremony on one day with close family and friends and perhaps celebrating with a larger circle at a date in the not too distant future.

The best man is a great guy, but sometimes he likes to overindulge. I’m worried that the speech will be inappropriate!

This is a concern for many brides and grooms. The fear that the best man may have a few too many drinks before the speeches are made. Fret not… it’s actually very rare that this happens! Most best men will fully realise the importance of the big day and their role in making sure it runs as smoothly as possible. If you are really concerned, you could maybe drop a few hints or have someone take him aside for a quiet word.

Happy wedding guest
We have a tight budget for the reception, is it okay to invite people without including a +1?

Yes of course this is fine. If you arrange your seating plan carefully you can seat these guests with others who are attending by themselves. You may find that some guests will ask you directly if they can bring someone with them, if so, feel free to explain that you are keeping the number to a minimum but they are very welcome to bring them to the reception a little later in the evening when the meals and speeches have ended.

If you have any concerns that you are a bit too embarrassed or worried to address directly with a friend or family member, feel free to pop us a message and we will include it in our next blog post as a general anonymous concern. It may be the ideal way to get your message across without having to ever broach the subject!

Simple Ways to Thank your Bridesmaids

As a professional wedding videographer, I see first hand just how much work goes into planning a wedding, and truly, no one does it quite as well as the Bridesmaids. Calm, cool and collected throughout, a thoughtful bridesmaid can really make a difference to how smoothly the planning process goes.

Bridesmaids helping beautiful Tipperary Bride

At a time when we are busy planning the details of our big day, it can be easy to forget those who are working tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure everything runs smoothly. If you are lucky enough to have a group of ladies by your side that would do absolutely anything for you and your intended, it would be a lovely idea to thank them in a way that lets them know just how cherished they are.

Jewellery

Nothing says it quite as well as jewellery does, however, this can be quite expensive if you have more than one or two bridesmaids, so don’t be afraid to pick up something that doesn’t cost the earth, moon and stars!

Whether you opt for a classic neckpiece, some pearl earrings or a charm bracelet the time you have taken to choose something special for your bridesmaids will let them know how appreciated they are.

Pamper them

It’s going to be a busy few months for your bridesmaids in the lead up to the big day and we’re pretty sure that a spa treatment or two will help get the girls back into the full swing of things. Book your bridesmaids a spa treatment or let them choose their own with a voucher for a luxury spa in your area. You can be guaranteed they’ll deserve to have a day that’s all about them once the big day has passed.

Make it Personal

If you have the opportunity to personalise a gift with a note or an inscription this will make a wonderful keepsake for your bridesmaids. It’s important these special women in your life know just how much they mean to you and how much you appreciate all the help they’ve given you when preparing for the wedding.

Throw them a ‘Thank You’ Party

A gift needn’t be something material; by organising an event especially for them you can tell the world how lucky you are to have them in your life. Host a small party in your home or treat the girls to some afternoon tea. Celebrate the fact that you will always be thankful for the support they have given you during this very special time. You could have a viewing of your wedding video and point out to them all the things you are thankful for!
