Overcoming the Nerves before your Wedding Speech

In this wedding blog post we are offering some tips and advice on overcoming the nerves before your Wedding Speech, here at Drangan Video we have attended  our fair share of weddings in Tipperary, Kilkenny and many other counties up and down the country, so its fair to say that we have heard  more wedding speeches than than your average Joe.
In 2013 our beautiful daughter celebrated her wedding in Langton House Hotel in Kilkenny it was a day that my wife and myself will never forget, we were looking forward to the day for so long, one of my father of the bride duties was to stand up and deliver a speech, it was an honor to stand up and talk. Traditionally, the first  speaker at an  Irish wedding is indeed the Father of the Bride, was I nervous ?  the answer is yes !!

Delivering a speech is never an easy task, particularly if you’re not comfortable with public speaking. In this blog post we are going to explore some tips that we believe will ease your nerves and assist with the preparations. Whether you’re delivering a speech as the Best Man, the Bride, Groom or Parent, these tips will help you to remain calm, cover all the important points and leave your audience feeling all warm and fuzzy!

Most wedding speeches will be highly anticipated by all guests at the wedding, so it’s important that you put real time and effort into delivering a speech that covers all of the most important points.

Writing the Wedding Speech

Always speak aloud before you start writing! This may seem a bit strange, but once you have spoken the words out loud, you begin to formulate other ideas in a way that flows more naturally. This practice will also assist with calming any nerves you may be experiencing.

Practice your Breathing

Really? Yes, breathing comes naturally we know that, but keeping your breathing relaxed and steady during the delivery of your speech, will allow you to remain calm and speak without stuttering or getting panicked.

Ask a Friend to be your Ears

Enlist the help of a good friend to sit and listen to your speech. Choose someone who isn’t afraid to give you honest feedback, someone who will boost your confidence and give you the encouragement you need.

Make Note Cards

It’s not always necessary to write down your speech word for word, you will want to sound natural on the day and perhaps adlib a bit from time to time. Word cards with bullet points that will steer you in the right direction will work wonders. Here are some of the points you can list on your notes:

• Who to thank
• Names of everyone at the top table
• Pointers
• ‘ Tell the story about……’

Avoid too much Alcohol or Caffeine before the Speech

As tempting as it may be to indulge in some dutch courage before the speeches, it’s probably a better idea to wait until the speech has been delivered before you partake of any alcohol. Try to steer clear from too much caffeine as well, as this can bring on feelings of anxiety if you’re already feeling a little nervous.

Be Assured you are Surrounded by Friends

If you start to feel a bit anxious or nervous, know that you are surrounded by friends and family that know and love you. They don’t mind if you stumble on your words a bit or seem a bit nervous. Remember that you have probably spoken to everyone in this room already at some stage, so there are no strangers here or people that judge you.

Nerves are Good

Nerves are there to remind us that we are doing something important. Surely that’s a good thing right? All you need to do is take that first leap and the rest of the speech will follow with ease. The adrenalin you get from that first round of applause or shriek of laughter will leave you feeling full of confidence.

Practice, Practice, Practice

This should go without saying, but you would be surprised at the amount of people who don’t take this advice. Practice will help you to deliver a polished speech with ease and clarity, the more you practice, the more accomplished your delivery will become.

Orla and Adrian’s Wedding Video Memories Dungarvan

This is a lovely wedding video which I had the pleasure of shooting in Dungarvan Co. Waterford.
The wedding ceremony took place in St. Augustine’s Church Abbeyside Dungarvan you would travel the length and breath of Ireland to find a more beautiful wedding ceremony venue.

Orla and Adrian could have wished for a better day, October 21st 2016 was a beautiful day the weather was unbelievably warm and sunny.
Each year I have the pleasure of traveling to many beautiful parts of Ireland  to shoot weddings videos, Dungarvan Waterford is one of my personal favorites.
Dungarvan is a busy harbor town located at the heart of County Waterford,  It is an ideal base for any tourist wishing to tour or holiday in Ireland’s ‘Sunny South East’.

Orla and Adrian were an amazing couple to work with, they were both so calm and relaxed  they gave me very little direction I was free to go ahead and do my own thing, my style of  recording is very laid back  allowing the couple to enjoy their big day without interruption.

My day began with a call to Orla’s parents house to  grab some footage of the ever important bridal preps, I like to remain discreet during the preps and after a little while I become invisible   to all concerned.
The video clip features some lovely shots of Orla having her make up and hair done, and the girls fussing around her like busy bees.

After the ceremony the bridal party headed to the waterfront to rear of the church in Abbeyside, the sun was still shining it was a brilliant opportunity to record some stunning video footage on the beach.

Middleton Park Hotel Cork

The Middleton Park Hotel  is one Cork’s best wedding venues, the staff are friendly and most helpful, it is a top class hotel and one of personal favorites. Orla and Adrian enjoyed a fab wedding reception, my video coverage of the day continued up to 11pm by which time I had enough footage captured, I was already looking forward to sitting down in studio and producing this wonderful wedding film.

Fantastic Wedding Venues in Co. Carlow & Co. Waterford

In my heart of hearts, I know I’m a Tipperary wedding videographer – I just love shooting weddings close to home and having an opportunity to capture some of Ireland’s most stunning backdrops. However, I have to admit to getting a bit excited every time I chat with brides and grooms getting married in neighbouring County Carlow or County Waterford. There are some absolutely breathtaking opportunities across the border, and I often forget just how magical these places can really be.

If you’re thinking of getting married in the South East, it’s well worth expanding your search outside of Tipperary and Kilkenny, and looking into some of the fantastic wedding venues in Co. Carlow and Co. Waterford. In Co. Carlow, for example, I love shooting wedding videos with views of the Blackstairs Mountains, or weddings overlooking Mount Leinster. And in Waterford, the Ballindud Mill and Cottage and the grounds of the Waterford Castle provide excellent wedding photo and video opportunities.

I’ve been fortunate enough to work as a wedding videographer in some of the best wedding venues in Co. Carlow and Co. Waterford. Here are two of my favourites that I’ve had the chance to visit recently.

Woodford Dolmen Hotel, County Carlow
Deirdre and Matt asked me to video their wedding in Ireland, to be held at the Woodford Dolmen Hotel which is located just outside Carlow town. Now, I think we can all agree that the Irish weather can be a bit unpredictable at times, especially in the winter, but this wedding venue really shines all year round. On Deirdre and Matt’s big day, things were a little damp and windy, and yet the gardens still looked spectacular, which meant I was able to shoot both inside and outside to really capture everything.

The gardens and surrounds are a real highlight at this venue, which is why many brides and grooms opt to have their wedding at the Woodford Dolmen Hotel. The hotel itself sits amongst 10 acres of riverside land, but the best part for a wedding videographer in Ireland is the hotel’s private bridge. The deep red of the bridge stands out against the lush green backdrop, making it one of my favourite places to shoot wedding footage in the country and that’s saying something! It has to be seen to be believed.

But let’s not overlook the inside of the hotel. There are two ballrooms to choose from: the smaller Killeshin Suite, and the mind blowing Barrow Suite which is actually the largest wedding venue in County Carlow, holding up to 825 guests! Both of the ballrooms have private, attached terraces which means that, come rain or shine, you can really make the most of your wedding venue. Ultimately, if you’re a sucker for romance, this hotel is perfect and I’m looking forward to videoing weddings here more often.
Tower Hotel, County Waterford

I was thrilled to be asked to be Michelle and Gary’s wedding videographer for their wedding at the Tower Hotel in Waterford, right in the bank of the River Suir. If you’re keen to incorporate Irish tradition into your wedding, then this is one of the best venues in Ireland. The hotel has been hosting weddings for more than 50 years, and serves up local foods such as Glin Valley chicken, baked Waterford ham, and goat cheese by Cooleeney Farmhouse Cheese in Tipperary. Yum!

The Tower Hotel will always be a favourite of mine, and I’ve enjoyed shooting wedding videos in both the smaller Dunmore Room and the larger Ardmore Suite over the years. While the surrounding landscape and historic venue are wonderful, I think it’s the little touches that really make this place special. In the cold winters, for example, you can swap your welcome champagne for a warming mug of spiced mulled wine. It’s these little things that really make a difference from a videographer perspective.

Although I love Tipperary, and Tipperary weddings, I have to admit that there are times when you just can’t beat the beautiful scenery of Co. Carlow and Co. Waterford, and I’m very fortunate that many of the brides and grooms I work with ask me to shoot their weddings in these spectacular locations.

Looking forward to seeing you at one of these amazing venues soon! – Eamon

Waterford Couple Niamh and Eoin Say I Do in Kilrossanty Waterford

Niamh and Eoin were married in Kilrossany, Mahon Bridge Co. Waterford on December 4th 2015 today I am finally getting around to sharing highlights from their wedding video.
My day began with a visit to Nimah’s parents house which was only a short drive from Kilrossanty, a tiny village located  in  County Waterford, on the main Carrick on Suir to Dungarvan road. The nearest town is Kilmacthomas.

The video features some lovey scenes from the Bridal Preparations the girls seemed calm and at ease and ready to deal with the joy, excitement and maybe a little panic which are part of a typical wedding day, all our wedding packages include a visit to the bride’s house in the morning.

As  a Tipperary based wedding videographer I am lucky to be within striking distance of  Waterford  which is one of my favorite wedding locations in Munster.  Kilrossanty is  very near  Mahon Bridge which is famous for the picturesque bridge which crosses  the river running from  Mahon Falls, it is a fantastic location for shooting high quality wedding video footage.

Niamh & Eoin enjoyed a wonderful wedding reception in The Park Hotel Dungarvan it is situated on five acres of landscaped gardens, overlooking the attractive Colligan River. The Park Hotel, Dungarvan is among the most popular wedding venues in the region. The elegant Deise ballroom with high ceilings and crystal chandeliers which can cater for 300 guests  will guarantee that your wedding celebrations are a truly memorable event.

Niamh & Eoin were a very nice couple to work with, they offered very little direction regarding the production of their wedding film, I was free to do my own thing on the day. They have received their wedding DVD and are very happy with the end result, wishing them all the best in married life it was a pleasure to have been their videographer, by the way I do welcome advice and direction regarding coverage of your big day.

Just a few words about my regular blog posts which are going down well  with couples who are  planning on saying yes, the blogs  are intended to offer advice and keep readers fully up to date on the latest wedding trends in Ireland, I also like to share my high quality wedding videos on line, gone are the days of handing out sample wedding dvds all my inquiries are coming from couples who have seen my videos on facebook, twitter and my Drangan Video Blog Page.

If you are on the look out for a professional wedding videographer, why not contact myself Eamon here at Drangan Video who will be more than happy to discuss every aspect of  producing a beautiful high quality wedding film of your big day.
