In our ever changing world of social media and an ever-increasing video sharing culture, deciding to hire a wedding videographer to record and preserve the precious memories of your special day is a MUST these days. Given its huge importance several pertinent questions should be asked before a hiring decision is made. Here are some questions to ask and points to consider. Feel free to get in touch with me (Eamon) here at Drangan Video should you wish to discuss any of the points raised below or to enquire about package prices for your own wedding.
How much is this going to cost us?
Irish people don’t like to talk about money and that’s the truth, but it’s vitally important that you get a full list of costs before you hire your videographer or any other wedding service provider. The greatest regret of many brides concerning their wedding day was their decision not to hire a videographer. In the majority of cases they chose not to because they believed it would be too expensive, this is a common misconception and believe me when I say it can be one of the most affordable services you purchase for your wedding! Remember, your wedding video will last forever whereas flowers, food and clothing will not. Getting an all inclusive package price upfront will allow you to see just how cost effective hiring a wedding videographer can be.
What style do you have in mind for our wedding shoot?
By asking this question you can elicit the videographer’s creative traits. This will give you the opportunity to share with the videographer what your thoughts are and what style you would prefer. Some videographers may prefer a documentary fly on the wall style where many events of the day are recorded (many of which are unseen by the bride and groom) and then edited to suit the tone of the day. Others will prefer a cinematic style approach where a lot of the footage will be staged including a lot of set pieces and posing. It’s important to understand and agree upon what the final product will look like.
Can we see some examples of your recent work?
Following on from your discussion about styles ask to see some samples of recent work competed in the different styles you may be considering. Any professional wedding videographer will be happy to direct you to an online portfolio where you can view video snippets and read testimonials from genuine customers.
What would you consider are the most important moments of the day and how would you go about capturing those moments?
Try to elicit from your prospective videographer what moments they see as key to a successful production. You may wish to have the preparations (possibly even the rehearsal) recorded as an introduction. You will need to know how the videographer will capture the ceremony and the all-important “I dos” and of course the “You may now kiss the bride…” moment.
Have you shot videos in our chosen venue before?
Experience and knowledge of the venue will be of considerable value to the videographer. From making decisions about lighting and backdrops to where to set up and store equipment, a good understanding of the reception rooms will be invaluable. Here at Drangan Video we will visit any venues we are unfamiliar with prior to the big day, this will ensure everything flows smoothly on the day of your wedding.
Will you intrude upon my guests?
It is of course very important to you and your intended that your guests have a great time at your wedding, you want it to be a day to remember for all the right reasons. During this discussion you can also ask the videographer whether they intend to do a “special message” section, where guests are often put on the spot and asked to say something about the bride and groom. This is not to everyone’s taste and should be clarified early on in your decision making process.
