How to Boost your Wedding Savings

In a time when the average couple in Ireland spends €25,000 on their wedding, this article is going to provide some tips on how you can boost your savings in the months and years leading up to the big day.

We’re all about making as many savings as possible and regularly write about money-saving ideas here on the blog, however, unfortunately there are still certain things that have to be paid for no matter how frugal or DIY savvy we are. It is with this in mind that we have compiled a list of ways to boost your savings, hopefully leaving you with a bit extra left over to enjoy a romantic honeymoon after the big event.

Wedding costs Kilkenny
Leave the Lattes – Saving of €1,560 a year

If like me, you’re quite partial to a coffee most days from the local barista or regularly head in to Starbucks on your way home from work, you could be costing yourself up to €30 a week! Over the space of a year this adds up to the considerable sum of €1,560… hard to believe right? Knock the coffee on the head and treat yourself to some roasted coffee you can make at home when you feel the need for that all-important caffeine hit.

Kick the Habit – Minimum saving of €3,590 a year

For those of you who smoke, don’t worry this isn’t going to be a lecture on why you should give up, you already know that too well. Let’s let the maths do the talking. The average full-time smoker will buy at minimum 6 packs of cigarettes a week, by todays prices that’s a staggering €70 a week, giving you a total of €3,590 a year. Just think what a difference that will make to your budget!

Take-away the urge – Saving of €800 + a year

Let’s assume you and your other half maybe get a take-away once every two weeks (that’s a fairly reserved assumption). At a spend of approximately €30 for each order, you could be looking at savings that total over €800 a year.

Stay in and count your money – Saving of €3,00 per person per year – Total €6,000
Whilst we all need to get out and socialise after a busy week at work, an individual who likes to go out once a week for a ‘few’ drinks can save upwards of €3,000 per year. By cutting down on the social outings as a couple for a few months or just reducing the amount of times you go out you could be adding a whopping total of €6,000 to your wedding day fund. Don’t go too crazy though, we all need to let loose once in a while and staying in indefinitely will have you going a little bit crazy!

Other cutbacks you and your partner can make in the lead-up to your big day, which should produce some significant savings:

• Cut down on unnecessary shopping trips
• Sell some of your unwanted goods or clothes on eBay
• Good at crafting? Set up an Etsy account and watch the money roll in!
• Shop for unbranded groceries
• Switch your banking to an account with less fees and higher interest rates
• Switch utility accounts such as gas and electric for more competitive prices
• Have an attic full of old books – sell these on Amazon
• Become a trader at your local car boot sale
• Have a spare room? Why not take in a lodger?

If you have any ideas to boost your savings in the lead up to your big day we would absolutely love to hear from you.

Wedding Videography, what’s trending?

Here at Drangan Video in Tipperary we like to offer advice on every aspect of wedding videographery, in this blog post we take a look at “what’s trending”

The word ‘trending’ is seen almost everywhere these days, fromTwitter, to Facebook and offline publications to television and online media. It is with this in mind that we decided to conduct our own research into what’s trending in wedding videography, we hope you enjoy the results and find inspiration for your own big day.

Same day short video edits
This is something we have seen quite a lot of requests for in the past 2 years and it’s looking like the trend is set to continue far into the future.
What is it exactly? Well, after we have finished filming for the day and the guests have all sat down for their meals, we do a short edit of the day so far. This short video or slideshow can then be shown on a big screen in the reception room later in the day for you and your guests to enjoy. We find this to be a wonderful icebreaker at the tableside as it really gives your guests something to talk about whilst getting to know each other.

Proposal videos
Proposal videos are a wonderful way to add something special to your big day and a great way to share your special moment with family and friends.
How does it work? If you’re planning to propose to that someone special in your life and want to record the moment, feel free to get in touch with us here at Drangan Video. We will record the moment you propose from a vantage point which will keep your secret right to the last moment. This video can then be shown to your guests during the meal or reception at a time of your choosing. We will be happy to provide you with a quote that includes a proposal video and the videography for your wedding day.

Wedding interviews
Would you like us to interview the guests at your wedding, maybe get some special messages on video for you to enjoy at a later date? This is a wonderful way to capture the essence of your day and really experience it from the point of view of friends and family.
Maybe you would like us to interview you and your intended before and after the ceremony? Interview videos can make a wonderful gift for your bridal party should you wish to record a special message just for them!

Documentary Style Videos
Documentary styled videos are a trend that seems to keep on growing and we are always delighted to be involved in these personal tributes. With a documentary video we will capture all the little things that you may not notice yourself, everything from uncle jack smiling when you walk past him on the aisle, to the hustle and bustle that happens before you get to the ceremony. A truly unique way to remember your vows and all those who were able to be a part of your big day.

Remember, it’s your big day so no request is too big or small here at Drangan Video. We will always do our utmost to attend to your special requests whether they are trending or not and will always be on-hand to lend advice on what style of video may suit you most.

Thanks for reading my latest blog post

Aoife & Neil happy to say I Do : Autumn Wedding Video Kilkenny

Here at Drangan video we try to share most of our recent productions especially  local weddings in Kilkenny, Carlow & Tipperary.  Aoife Fitzpatrick & Neil Lanigan were married in Kilmoganny, Kilkenny on October 3rd 2014 this is a snippet from their wedding video.

When it comes to planning a wedding whether it be in Kilkenny, Carlow  or any other county in Ireland one little  concern is the weather, “will we have a fine day” if you are planning an Irish wedding brilliant sunshine is not something that can be taken for granted.  Aoife & Neil  did not have that glorious sunshine, as I

arrived at Aoife’s parents house in Kilmoganny the rain was pouring down, as I made a run from the car to the hall door trying to keep my camera dry I could hear the sounds of laughter and fun as the Aoife and the girls attended to bridal preps, on entering the house the pouring rain was barley mentioned some of the girls did comment “pity about the rain sure thats Ireland for you”  what a wonderful attitude to have, just get on with enjoying the day and to hell with the rain.

It was a pleasure to return to the village of Kilmoganny to record a wedding video for  another member of the Fitzpatrick family, I was the videographer for Aoife’s  sister Breada which is almost 10 years ago now  time just seems to fly by.  Aoife & Neil were  so nice to work with, Aoife is  blessed with good looks and a warm friendly personality and she has a great sense of humor, Neil is a lovely guy very relaxed and easy going and happy to leave the fussing to the girls “typical Kilkenny Groom”.

We stopped off at Butler House in Kilkenny for some photos and video shots with Aoife Neil and the bridal party, it is an ideal location for a wedding video  and photo shoot.  The old Georgian residence is part of the Kilkenny Castle estate,  lovely staircases, marble fireplaces, magnificent ceilings and a perfectly kept walled garden are just some of the features of Butler House.

The Springhill Court Hotel was the reception venue, the hotel has recently been updated with new decor, it is a well known wedding venue in Kilkenny and has stood the test of time down through the years. It is a venue that is well worth considering  if you are looking for value for your money in an excellent 3 star hotel.

This a lovely comment which I received from Aoife & Neil on my Drangan Video facebook page.

Eamon, just a quick note to tell you how pleased we were with our wedding video. You managed to capture the essence of an Irish wedding perfectly. The music was excellent throughout the video. You captured so much without us even noticing you there which was perfect! We would have no hesitation in recommending you to any other couple intending to get married in the future. Thanks again for a wonderful video Aoife & Neil Lanigan 3rd October 2014

The use of Facebook and social media devices at weddings

One great advantage of been a  wedding videographer  in Tipperary and Kilkenny  is that I get to attend a large amount of weddings in many different venues.  I am always interested in the  changing trends that have come about over the last few years, now a days  nearly all wedding guests  are armed with some sort of video recording  device, smart phones, phablets, ipads, pocket cameras with wifi, you name it the list goes on  so Bride & Groom to be, look out  be fore you know it your wedding day could be unfolding to the world on facebook and other social media pages.

The use of Facebook and social media devices  at weddings: is a debatable  subject.  On one hand  you have couples who will love the idea of  huge exposure on Facebook, Twitter and social media pages.   I have heard of a Hotel in America that  is offering to supply a company whose job it is to manage all social media posting on your big day , they would more than likely stream line posts from the wedding guests to achieve the best saturation on line.  On the other hand there are couples who  where guests and were asked to refrain from using their smart phones during the ceremony, this would be common practice at some celebrity weddings in ireland, some times the celebrant will ask the guests to power off the mobiles, just in case of a ring tone during the ceremony.

Here at Drangan Video the use of facebook and social media, plays an important role for me as a wedding videographer. I offer sharing on facebook, twitter, youtube, vimeo and google +  at no extra cost with any  of my 5 wedding video packages.  A short  4 minute video highlights clip will be shared on line  but only with the permission of the couple.

We are all aware of the role that Facebook  plays at weddings in Ireland now,  it is a matter of consideration for the Bride & Groom during the wedding planning process.  Many couples would prefer to wait for the Professional Wedding Video and photos before sharing on Facebook,  the advice for guests is to try to honor the feelings of the couple by asking them if its ok to share wedding clips on social media.

 1. Play it safe.

When you’re the guest, it’s best to avoid whipping out your phone until you know what the couple has planned.

2. Once you know the plan, respect it.

If the couple has asked you to refrain from taking photos on your phone, follow their rules. “First and foremost, you’re a guest at this wedding, so be respectful of the fact that they’re paying a big chunk of money for professional wedding video and photos to be captured on the day  But if they’ve created a hashtag just for the big day, go ahead and tweet away.

3. Don’t go overboard.

If you’re at a wedding where social media use has been approved, you should still keep yourself in check. “Less is more when it comes to being a guest,”  “Don’t upload 90 unedited photos.” or video clips. As with any big celebration, wedding guests tend to let loose as the night goes on, putting the phone away after dinner is served so as to avoid embarrassing anyone is a good idea.

4. Enjoy the moment firsthand.

But most of all,  make sure you enjoy the event as it’s happening in front of you, instead of through a screen. “Share those memories,”  “But be sure to put the phone away and enjoy the day that the couple have put so much time and money into planning.”
